10 SEO mistakes that kill your traffic

Most sites do not suffer from a lack of tricks, but from a few recurring mistakes. Here they are, together with the fix for each.

When we audit a site with troubled traffic, we almost always find the same short list of culprits. None of them is exotic and every one is fixable. Run through the ten points like a checklist: you will probably recognise at least two or three from your own site.

A flight of steps leading up to a crown at the top: every fixed SEO mistake is a step up in the rankings
The road up often begins not with new tactics, but with fixing the old mistakes.

1. A slow site

Slow loading drives visitors away and lowers your ranking, especially on mobile devices. Fix: test with PageSpeed Insights, compress the images, remove unnecessary scripts and plugins, invest in decent hosting. These steps alone solve most cases.

2. Duplicate content

The same texts across several pages, descriptions copied from manufacturers, or versions of the site with and without www confuse Google about which page to rank. Fix: unique text for every important page, canonical tags and redirecting the duplicate addresses to a single primary one.

3. Missing or identical meta tags

Title and meta description are your storefront in the results. When they are missing or the same everywhere, you lose both ranking and clicks. Fix: a unique, descriptive title of up to about 60 characters and a description that says what the visitor gains, for every page.

4. Thin pages

Pages with two sentences and one stock image give Google no reason to show them. Fix: expand the important pages with real information: process, prices or guidelines, questions and answers, examples. Merge or remove the hopelessly thin pages.

5. Poor mobile layout

Google ranks based on the mobile version of the site. Tiny text, misaligned elements and buttons you cannot hit with a finger are a direct loss. Fix: go through the whole site from a phone and fix everything that gives you trouble. With an old design, this often means a new template.

Links to deleted pages and 404 errors waste your crawl budget and annoy people. Fix: periodic checks with a site crawler or with the reports in Search Console, and redirecting the deleted addresses to the closest living page.

7. Ignored Search Console

Many owners have never opened Google Search Console, yet this is the free channel through which Google tells you what is wrong: unindexed pages, mobility problems, even manual penalties. Fix: register the site today and make a habit of glancing at the reports at least once a month.

The “500 links for 50 leva” packages leave a trail of spam sites that the algorithms recognise. In the worse case a manual penalty follows, which is hard to lift. Fix: stop the schemes, and in case of a penalty clean up the links and submit a reconsideration request. Build links through useful content, partners and industry media.

9. Keyword stuffing

Texts like “cheap blinds Sofia, blinds Sofia prices, best blinds Sofia” were written for a robot from the past decade. Today both Google and AI systems read them as a signal of low quality. Fix: write for the human, use the word and its natural variants where it makes sense, and answer the real question.

10. No content at all

A site with five static pages, untouched for years, gives Google fewer and fewer reasons to show it, and AI assistants nothing to cite. Fix: start with the questions your clients ask every week and answer them in a blog. One solid article a month is a perfectly good start.

The audit is a map of the site: every mistake is a pin waiting to be taken down.

Before you chase new territories, put your own kingdom in order: most traffic is lost at home.

Where to start

Sort the list by damage: first Search Console and indexing, then speed and mobile layout, after that the meta tags and content. If you would rather have someone go through all of this professionally, that is exactly the kind of audit our SEO, AIO and GEO optimisation service begins with: a list of the problems found, priorities and a plan to fix them.

Frequently asked questions

Which SEO mistake is the most dangerous?

The one you cannot see. That is why the first step is always Google Search Console: it shows indexing errors, problem pages and manual penalties. A site that no one monitors can lose traffic for months without the owner ever noticing.

How do I tell whether my site is slow?

Test it with Google's PageSpeed Insights and look at the result for mobile devices. It also shows the specific causes: heavy images, unnecessary scripts, a slow server. A pragmatic test is your own feeling too: open the site on your phone over a mobile network.

Is buying links dangerous?

Yes. Paid link schemes break Google's rules and can lead to an algorithmic devaluation or a manual penalty. Even if they go unnoticed for a while, the risk hangs over the site permanently. Durable links are earned with content, partnerships and real activity.

How often should I publish new content?

There is no magic frequency. Consistency and quality matter more: one useful, well-structured article a month beats four empty ones. A site that publishes nothing for years, however, gives Google fewer and fewer reasons to show it.

I fixed the mistakes. When will I see results?

Technical fixes take effect after the pages are crawled again, which can take anywhere from days to weeks. Recovering lost rankings and traffic is usually slower, especially after a long period of problems. Track the changes in Search Console.
